I have had my buffers in conventional memory since that first day and haven't had any problems. Buffers is really a poor man's disk cache. If you are running a real disk cache like SMARTDRV, they also recommend lowering BUFFERS to 8 (I use 4 with Super PC-Kwik and my performance is just fine).
