I don't know if this is a problem with your emulators or that fact that 'vi' NEEDS 7 bits, odd parity. If you don't have this set up properly the unix machines allow you to logon but vi is really fussy about these things. Because you can logon doesn't mean that you have all your setting correct. I experienced these problems on a Terminal (not a computer) with a hardware VT100 emulator. And I too thought I was broken.
