I don't know what type of mech. is in the Chinon, but in the Porta
Drive there is the Toshiba 3201.

How do you want them to work with AU/X?  As a read-only Drive? 
As long as you have the device driver for that brand of CD in the
AU/X world, there shouldn't be any problem.
The AU/X CD from Apple is nothing more that the software you need
to install AU/X on your machine.  You don't run AU/X off of the CD
itself.  So as far as using the AU/X CD with the drive, you can as
long as your using MacOS just like you would for any other CD.  As 
far as reviews of drives that work with AU/X, check out MacUser
magazine just over a year ago they had a review of CD drives.  I'm
at work, so I can't check the date on that issue, but I have it.

BTW: I own a CD Tech. Porta Drive, and it work decently, but the 
music interface if very poor, I suggest you get the DA "CD Remote"
from Apple which works much better.
