When I first read this announcement, I thought of Cube Route.
They have an Advert in the back of NextWorld about a device
that connects a NeXT to a phone line for Fax, voice mail
and other stuff.

Charles Perkins is/worked on it (He is the person who is
writing the Com.Sys.Next articles for NeXTworld); I don't
know about a ship date or how it is going.

So, there seems to be a real product that does what
you wanted.
