I am using C METAFONT version 1.7 on a SUN Sparc1 running X11R4/Motif
with SUNOS 4.1.1.

According to the METAFONT book, I should be able to display font
characters on the screen, and interactively observe the results of my
METAFONT commands. Nothing of the sort happens in response to the showit
command! Any clues?
