I have an interesting problem which defies an answer (as far as I can see).

I need to have backslashes (\) appear in my text, but I can't seem to
make the \verb{} environment work in LaTeX.  Even if that would work,
the font changes to \tt and in a figure this looks bad.

Is there a simple way to remove the magic connotations from the \ ?
