If you are a rich man, you can always try commercial comm software like CrossTalk for Windows. I have been using it and its pretty good. It does support ANSI and I use it to log into BBS and get the picture. Sometimes the screen even look better on Crosstalk than in DOS terminal programs. It does allow you to change the sizes of fonts and have a few different fonts set. File transfer protocols include X/Y/Zmodem, Kermit, CompuServe,..etc.. (good choice of them.) It will answer your problems above, but that is if you are willing to spend a bit of money. It's not really that expensive...
