Thank you, thank you! I don't feel like a compleat (sic) idiot now! My problem disappeared after I 1) recompiled and reinstalled the original version of Cnews that I had, 2) decreased my ULIMIT to a (supposedly) legal setting (6MB), and 3) installed all of the patches up to, but not including the 1991 patches, and compiled and installed. I don't know which of the above affected the problem since they were all done at essentially the same time.
