They have been named by their building companies: Northrop YF23 "Black Widow II" Lockheed YF22 "Lightning II" [Gee, what imagination! :-( --CDR] Note that each is named after a two-engined WWII fighter built by the respective companies. The Black Widow P-61 was a night fighter used mostly in the Pacific theater and everyone should know the impressive P-38 Lightning ... Robin D.
