Cathy, you must have read a different Vatican document than I did. The one I read had a rather mealy-mouthed condemnation of violence against anyone, but offered the opinion that no one should be surprised if violence occurs when gay people refuse to stay hidden. Can you spell "chills-up-my-spine"? It's spelled "R-a-t-z-i-n-g-e-r". And with few exception on the local level, the Church chooses to remain silent whenever there is a opportunity of condemning such directed violence.
