If you send a message addressed like this: To: user@some.dom.ain, another@some.where.else then your user agent may be passing the comma to smail in the envelope addresses (I know mailx on my system has this problem). Smail does nothing special to get rid of such a comma, but perhaps your previous (non-smail) MTA did get rid of it. The fix may be as simple as omitting the commas when you type the addresses in the To: line.
