It mysteriuosly stopped functioning during an anaylses (ie, it probably *wasn't* doing disk i/o). After discussions with Northgate's service reps, we purchased a new disk controller which failed to help. Now it looks like the motherboard might "be bad". We seem to have four about four choices: 1) Buy a mother board (warrantee period unclear, $1700); 2) Send the entire machine to NG for repairs (90 days, ~$1500); 3) Use the university store: they remove the mother board and send it to a company called Victor in West Virginia. (1 year, ~~$350); or 4) Find a company other than Victor. We'd rather with 3 or 4, but have no experience with repair places. Have you any? The university store is said to be satisfied with Victor, but admits that they normally don't service Northgates. I would very much appreciate any advice or experiences pertainig to major Northgate repairs by third parties. As I am cross-posting this to a group that I don't normally read, I would prefer email. Please email me if you would like a summary of my responses. Thanks very much, -alan mead : amead@s.psych.uiuc.edu
