Attention MSDOS guru types everywhere!!!!

I've looked in several MSDOS reference manuals and have found nothing.

Is there any way to maintain "instances" of an open device?  i.e. If I
open three handles to the same device, is there a way that my strat routine
can determine which channel is being used to access the device?
