Pope) Newsgroups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware Subject: Hard drive problems... Message-ID: Date: 12 Apr 91 00:57:03 GMT Organization: Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburgh, PA Lines: 25 I tried to start my computer the other day, and the hard drive did (or rather didn't do) a novel thing... It didn't start... At first I thought it was a regular boot-up failure (which my computer is prone to) but after using fdisk and giving the chassis a listen, I determined that the motor wasn't turning... The drive is a Seagate and not prone to "sticking," besides, its been around a while, so I don't think it just stuck... The only other aspect that was different was the climate... I usually use it in a colder environment, but it was only 85F out... Anyway, the problem seems to be gone now, when I turned it on today, it worked fine... Has anyone else had a similar problem??? I am wondering if it is likely to repeat itself... I don't know of any way to replace a drive motor without at least destroying the data on the drive, but I haven't fiddled with them that much... At any rate, any insight would be appreciated... Thanks in advance... +-------------------------------+-------------------------------------------+ | Thomas W.
