Indeed, none of the GNU software costs money, but there is a license (basically stating that you have to make machine readable source available to anyone who gets copies of that program (or anything derived from that program) available at no extra charge other than some form of s&h and you can not restrict them from redistributing it further) and there for you are not "free" to use it any way you like.
