At the same time I upgraded my 50Z to 2 Mb I performed the same surgery on a Model 30-286. The salesclerk was not leading you on, you need SIMMS which are specific for the 30-286. You need 2 Mb SIMMs and you can install two of these for a total of 4 Mb. You cannot mix them with the existing 512 Kb SIMMs and as far as I know you can't use 1 Mb SIMMs. The prices may be higher than for "standard" SIMMs but have you checked true-blue prices? :-) In response to the previous posting ... No tools are required to remove or install SIMMs. Simply lift the latches and ease out at an angle. The Reference booklet that came with your 50Z has a pretty good explanation.
