I've had similar troubles with my SE.  From my experience, it's
usually a bad idea to turn off/reboot the computer while the
drive is accessing.  A quick solution that may work would be to
replace the system file.  If that doesn't work, hit it with
Norton Utilities, and everything should be fine.
