We have a lab with about 30 some IBM 30's and Zenith 386sx's, plus 16 Mac's. The server is an IBM PS/2 model 80 with 4M RAM and 2 hard drives (a 70M and a 310M, so not mirrored), using UTP and Cabletron cards and packet drivers (for TCP, etc.). The problem is: recently (and intermittently) the system has been crashing with a General Protection Error the only message that's has appeared. We've replaced several memory chips, and the mother board. We've also reinstalled the operating system, which is 2.15c with the Mac VAP. We did discover that the Current Server Utilization shot up to over 90% prior to one of the crashes and stayed there for several minutes (an assistant was looking at FCONSOLE because the system was slow). Normally we run around 20-30% under a full load of users, and that's only peaks. There was also a Mac print job that never finished, after 25 minutes! It seems to be a hardware problem, but I don't seem to be able to track it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. On another system, we've just recently noticed that SYSCON is giving us strange output in the USER INFO/name/OTHER INFO option where you should be able to discern the total amount of disk space allocated and the amount used. We see the amount allocated, but the amount used always appears as 4k more the the amount allocated! This is for every user we have...but it doesn't operate that way. That is, no one has gotten any messages saying that they had overextended their limit. And VOLINFO doesn't show any extra space being used. For reference, we are running 2.15c (waiting for 3.11)...again on a model 80 (20 Mhz machine). We lost our hard drive a few weeks ago when the Hot Fix area overloaded and shut off, and the hard drive failed the COMPSURF tests. The drive was replaced and the system reinstalled (I can install 2.15c in my sleep!) 8-) Again, any help or suggestions appreciated. The only other thing I can think of at this point is to run BINDFIX, and then VREPAIR, but things have been so strange lately that it makes the Site Director very nervous if I suggest taking the system down when it appears to be serving us properly (with the exception of the SYSCON glitch). Thanks in advance ... Syl Berta
