Epoch is Gnu Emacs 18.55 with extensions to make it "more closely bound into" X11. It will run with X11R3 or R4. It works with (almost) all window managers/looks&feels that we know of. Features include: * multiple x-windows. * properties, client messages etc. * ability to mark regions of text by font, color, inverse, underline, read-only and stipple (fixed-width fonts only at present). * Does it run under X on Apollo/Domain SR10.2 OS ? Yes * How much RAM is required to have a reasonable response ? Whatever you need to run X plus your applications plus about 2meg for Epoch (although, like Emacs, the more you're doing with it the bigger it can grow). On a sparc, I'd expect that to get reasonable response from almost any X-client I'd need at least 12 meg. * How many Mbytes of disk-space is required to install it ? About the same size as GnuEmacs: say around 20 meg, the distribution is around 12 meg. You need to keep the binary and lisp directories afterwards. You can share the Epoch lisp files with GnuEmacs but not the other way around. * Is it an editor that can serve as a programming-environment in a 1st year course in programming ? Well, if you would use GnuEmacs then yes, otherwise no. We do use Emacs here with our 1st year cs students. * Is it easy to learn ? No harder than Emacs. its Emacs + some fairly obvious additional keybindings, altho of course its infinitely extensible, how baroque do you want to/need to get? * Where can I get it (i.e. is it ftp-able or do I have to purchase it) ? ftp from cs.uiuc.edu by anonftp. Get the file pub/epoch-files/epoch/epoch-3.2.tar.Z and the 2 patch files. Apply the patches. Epoch is in use at NIT in trondheim, you can perhaps get it from them if there is a problem with FTP. It has a reasonable (we think) programmers guide, and a pretty basic users guide. We assume you already know emacs and have access to the emacs documentation. That's available from the FSF, details in the epoch distribution somewhere (try the toplevel README file) Look in etc/Machines for special details concerning building on your architecture. Thanks.
