I'm looking for a database that runs under UNIX (or variants) that can be
directly accessed by some standard statistical package (preferably SAS)
without intermediate steps in preparing a system file.  Does such an 
animal exist?  Fairly important to this search is that db's progress
towards object orientation.  (I may be way off base here, but I envision
such a database to filter the native data and produce some format compatible
with the stat package, like a flag that causes the data to be read as
SYSTEM-MISSING.  However, it is not inconceivable that I am being ridiculous.)

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
