The reason for this was a posting in comp.sys.next which explained that while the machine has only 16 bits for every pixel on screen, it _internally_ has 8 bits for every base color (R, G, B). I understood that it in a way has a palette of 16M but you can't directly access them. The system automatically chooses the best shades for each situation from this palette. Go figure. Perhaps saying that the Color station has a palette of 16M is a bit too much and saying that it only has a palette of 4096 is a bit too low... The thruth lies somewhere in between. :-) Jouni
