Yes, I think there is a "compress" at atari.archive GIFs are already compressed using the same algorithm that "compress" uses. It's just that the files you have are probably BIG images, with lots of detail - there's no way around it. See if there is a IBM PC at your campus and FTP to 3.5" floppies (or kermit, or whatever).
