I have been attempting to get uucp to work over Ethernet between two
HP 9000/4xx machines running HP-UX 7.05 and using the vtdaemon as
described in the 7.0 manuals.  I can use Uutry and get a successful
connection in about one in every three or four tries.  Most of the
time I don't get the login prompt.  I've tried numerous variations of
the chat script, but the success rate is low and essentially unusable.
I have noticed that the vtdaemon issues a "vt -u /dev/ieee" to the
remote system.  When I issue this command, I indeed have trouble
getting the login prompt.  If I use vt <nodename>, I get "login:"
every time.

Software status bulletins on the HP LaserROM that I have seem to indicate
that there may be problems with this.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Are there any alternatives to using the vtdaemon?

Ultimately, I want workstations to be able to uucp files from UUNET
via a server, i.e. "uucp ge!uunet!~/<file> ."
