        The sounds you hear are diagnostic tones supplied to help identify 
problems.  You can learn the meaning of the sounds from a program called 
Sound Diagnostic.  It's Apple proprietary, so it cannot be posted without 
their permission, but is commonly available from individuals.  If you can't 
find it, drop me a note and I'll try to ship it to you.
