As usual, the problem was in the one setting I hadn't played with because I was sure it was correct. I had "automatic baud adjustment" set, which I thought meant it would automatically adjust modem to modem speed, not modem <-> host. Oh well. After receiving several messages about this, I turned it off, and everything works fine (I had already played around with all of the RTS/CTS, DCD, and other settings to get them correct).
