Many thanks to those who responded regarding my modem problems!
As usual, the problem was in the one setting I hadn't played with 
because I was sure it was correct.  I had "automatic baud adjustment"
set, which I thought meant it would automatically adjust modem to
modem speed, not modem <-> host.  Oh well.  After receiving several
messages about this, I turned it off, and everything works fine (I
had already played around with all of the RTS/CTS, DCD, and other
settings to get them correct).  It is kind of amazing to me that
even the two Abaton tech guys I talked to didn't suggest this. . .
