Subject: Meta key in xmh on an RS/6000 - what is it?

We are trying to use xmh on an RS/6000 model 530, AIX 3.1, update 3003.  We
have an X11R3 server.  We are trying to find out what happened to the Meta
character.  xmodmap shows that mod1 is Alt_L (0x44) and Alt_R (0x46).  
However, when we try to use Alt for the metacharacter, it doesn't work.
Has anyone been able to get xmh running and the metacharacters to work?
