I'm not sure if this is the problem that you are having (or even if the
following is a correct solution), but I had a similar problem with a very large
file.  I found that I had not enough memory available to do a spelling check. 
I removed some of my TSR's etc. (I only had 1 MB at the time) and it then
worked.  Don't know if this was the correct diagnosis of my problem, but it
worked.  Any comments, anyone?
