Under SunOS 4.0.3, the following worked just fine on 3/60's with cgfours:

  openwin -dev /dev/cgfour0 -dev /dev/bwtwo1

The server ran on both the color and the overlay plane, switching between them
at the edge, much as the MIT server does.  But, when I installed SunOS 4.1.1,
I get:

 WIN ioctl number 80706728: Device busy
 Couldn't get base SunWindow
 giving up.
 /usr/openwin/bin/xinit:  Connection refused (errno 61):  unable to connect to \
                                                                 X server


The MIT server (as compiled under 4.0.3) still does the right thing.  Any
ideas?  I've got users who want to run X and Sunview on the same fb with
adjacentscreens, but that also stopped working in 4.1.1.  Any ideas on
what to blame and how to fix it?  Sun has been less than helpful about it.
