It is not that unusual. However if the cyst is causing problems below your injury level such as pain or decreased sensation then it may be necessary if you want no pain or more sensation to allow a shunt to be put in. If there is no such problem I would not allow anyone to do any surgery. If there is, only you can decide. I can tell you that I know two people who have had the operation and one saw no change while the other was greatly helped.I hope that helps a little.
