In addition to fixing the problems you mention, CSCPAT 101 (a new backup image) and CSCPAT 153 (new F11BXQP) are crucial to the reliability of your backups. Even though most of the problems fixed require obscure conditions to be observed, I wouldn't trust any backup made without them. Put in the patches then backup your disks. There are no side effects.
