It seems that the magic combination is to press, simultaneously, the COMMAND-CONTROL-POWER ON keys. Sheeeesh! A programmer's switch would have been more intuitive, IMHO. I wonder if this will work in all instances...probably not, not if the system is reeeally hosed. Anyway, thanks to all those who sent me the answer.
