Subject: afm & .bepf files: What do they do????

Does anyone have any idea what the .bepf and screen-afm files do *under 2.0*??
I moved some of these files out of my /NeXTLibrary/Fonts... directories, 
leaving only the afm and outline files, and I could discern no differences in
dispaly or printing. They must be there for a reason I suppose, but damned if
know why.
