The problem has been solved. Apparently the installers of the 3COM boards in the PCs left switched "on" a debugging signal that should have been 'off'. This confused the PCs only a little, so that pc-to-pc communication worked pretty well, but confused the SUN a great deal. After setting the 3COM boards correctly, PC to Sun comunication works great: a 2 meg file can be transferred in 12 seconds from the PC to the Sun. Thanks for the replies.
