Thanks to those who repsonded by e mail.  In case anyone else was wondering,
there is a chapter on BibTeX in the LaTeX manual.

Now I have another question: I support a number of Plain TeX users, who for
reasons I'd rather not go into, would prefer not to switch to LaTeX.  Is there
a (simple) bibliographic system for Plain TeX?
