For many months now the official word has been that OS/2 V2.0 would require a 386 (at least an SX) because it required the use of some of the 386's modes that a 286 doesn't have. If it does run on a 286 then it may have less trouble competing with Windows, but on the other hand it may have more trouble competing with Unix/Motif - it could be perceived as more of a lower-end product, and having to accommodate the 286's 64K segments could mean that many products and applications would find it a less attractive platform.
