Well, danw@tbird9.prime.com, a Gentleman and a Scholar, pointed out the problem to me. Those of us who configure SunOS kernels for fun and profit are used to seeing strange lines in kernel conf files, like: dtop4 kb3 ms3 for 3 keyboards, 3 mice, 4 "desktops", etc., and are equally used to trimming them down to 1 -- who's got 3 mice? Well, somehow or another, trimming dtop under 4.1.1 results in the above. So, simply regenning a kernel with dtop4 in it did the trick, and now all of my users who were ready to lynch me after the 4.1.1 ugrade now think I'm the greatest thing since flip chips.
