I started working out with weights last year at the age of 43. At first, I thought I'd probably get a heart attack. I must admit when I started to do deep knee bends with a barbell on my shoulders, with about 50 lbs, it took my breath away after about 10 repetions. My cardiovascular shape must have improved, because I now do two sets of 15 repetions with the last set weighing 170 lbs. It seems very easy to me now. My goal is to work up to 15 reps, at 200 lbs. You will be surprised how you leg size will increase. I generally work out at home 3 days a week for about one hour. I do the situps, biceps curls, military press, calve raises, leg extensions and curls and bench presses. All of these combine to make a significant difference in how you feel and your overall strength. It's the consistency of the routine that makes the difference. If you can stick with an exercise program, you will be surprised how it affects every thing physical that you do. Even yard work becomes a simple thing the better fit you are. You don't get tired. The deep knee bends enable you to climb stairs over many building flights that at one time would have been exhausting. A year ago, if I could do 10 pushups, I was doing good. I can now do at least 35 fairly easily. My goal is at least 50. If you get into this type of training, start slow with low weight and keep records and add weight very slowly as your body adjusts. As you work out, you will also notice that your overall muscle size increases slowly but surely. I have made a small investment in weights and a bench with a leg extension device attached in order to accomplish what I have related to you. I really feel that free weight lifting is a tremendous way to get into great shape. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!159!950!John.Nuyen Internet: John.Nuyen@f950.n159.z1.fidonet.org
