On "secure" systems which generate pseudo-random PIDs, you are certain that there will not be two processes at the same time with the same PID; but successive processes could have the same PID. The probability of two with the same PID being created during different parts of the same second is small, but it doesn't require cycling through 30000 processes. Richard M.
