Yes, the US is now a signatory to the Berne Convention; everything you write is, by default, copyright. Some countries are not signatories, and may or may not require a printed c in a circle or the words "Marca Registrada" or whatever. But the basic claim of "ooh ooh (C) doesn't mean anything!!!!" has been pointless for several years: it doesn't mean anything, but it doesn't have to any more -- and it certainly serves notice that the author wanted a copyright, probably strengthening any suit.
