Well, I'm not going to get sucked into this debate at length, despite
that fact that I have some very strong views on it (I have been / am
an engineer of both hardware and software for years).

Let me just quote Henry Ford at you: "An engineer can design for ten cents
what any damn fool can do for a Dollar".

He may have something there ...
