That is the address of the device that connects your segment to the outher ethernet(s) etc. I'm not sure what level of AIX you have but mine originally (& wrongly) assumed MY address as the gateway. If it wasn't on my segment it couldn't get to it. Just changed the gateway address and all was fine. Take Care!
