My JapaneseIBM machine thinks the number of directories on a 1.44MB
diskette is 224. But I remember someone said it was 288 on a PS/2
machine in U.S. Which is correct? And are the volume number and
volume label indispensable in the boot sector?
As I have nothing to do with US machines and do not peek this news 
group, will you please e-mail me for the info?

P.S. Are the info from 0x20 to 0x3f in the boot sector indispensable
for the non-bootable disk? Thanks.
