 I saw the problem on a Mac IIcx, the INIT that made After Dark hang was 
SmartAlarms.  This is a very valuable INIT...not as easy to trash as Bart
Simpson saying something clever.  Whenever the screen is sleeping and 
SmartAlarms tries to put up a reminder the Mac hangs.  I think that with
all the different methods mentioned here to make After Dark hang, it's 
obvious there is a problem with background tasks and After Dark.  Hope a 
fix comes out soon, but for now I traded After Dark for Pyro!  

Pyro! doesn't have as many displays, and they aren't as nice, but it has 
never hung on me.  I've used it for at least 8 months.
