I had a similar problem - I got round it by running the Excel
application first, and then from there do an 'open' on the relevant
document.  (At some stage, the problem seemed to just go away...)
Also, if I'm not mistaken, I got a warning from Excel when I tried to do
this but it just carried on as normal after that.
