We recently got our external PLI superfloppy as well and have similar
problems getting the NeXTcube to boot.  It's a 68040-upgrade cube, 8mb
RAM, 340MB HD, optical drive...

I'd say the machine boots correctly about 25% of the time.  The rest
of the time I have to Command-Command-tilde and then type "b"...

I too, followed the PLI manual instructions to the letter.  And even
called PLI.  Talked to someone who didn't know much about the NeXT...
