Thanks to the dozens of folks who replied. All concurred as follows:

SparcStation 2 systems have the AUI connector only, they do not have a
thinnet BNC. ie you must buy a transceiver.

SparcStation 2 systems use the same sun4c software as SS1 and SS1+ systems
but are *not* supported before release 4.1.1

SparcStation 2 systems will drive Exabyte tape drives without
modification.
