I am thinking about a SYSV development system (a money 
making machine!) as a wedding present for an undergraduate
computer nerd who also happens to be a close relative of mine.

I can't afford to write a blank check, so I am wondering whether
the $300-$500 max that I am willing to spend on the present will
do the trick, or I should instead go out and buy a VCR.
