"Emacs" (capitalize according to taste) is really a "class" of editors. Thus, "GNU emacs" is an example of an emacs. You'll often see people referring to GNU emacs as just "emacs", but I like to discourage the practice in order to reduce confusion. Other examples are Unipress/Gosling emacs, CCA emacs, MicroEmacs, Hemlock, Epsilon, PDP-10 emacs, and so on. Some of these have influenced or inspired others, but it's important to realize that they are distinct packages.
