A WILD SHOT ... MAY 6 ... NEEDED TONIGHT...!


On a 286 ... it has/had two floppy drives: a: & b:
	     and on the HD:   c: & d:               all DOS.

It was running 3.2   (This is the story as I get it, will know more
		      tomorrow ... but for now...)

The sys files were on c:  on d: text for a manual (WordPerfect)...


Now then, (somebody) attempted to upgrade the os from 3.2 to 3.3, so
(somebody else) could run a program/application that required 3.3 or
better (having to do with the text on d:).

Evidently, (somebody) is an experienced Unix user, and didn't know
about 'hidden' files -- msdos.sys, io.sys, and possibly (on 3.2,
filedata.sys -- don't know about that one, is it just HP 3.2?).

Apparently, what happened was:  (somebody) simply deleted the
(visible) 3.2 files on c: and COPIED the visible 3.3 files.

Hence:  System now has 3.2 sys files and everything else is 3.3.

Of course it doesn't work.

All of that, I can probably fix ... but there's more.

All the text that was on d: has been lost, because now (Jesus, I
hope I've got this right...) booting the machine from a: with 3.3
it can't recognize drive d: 

Error messages are (of course) 'Incorrect DOS version' at times,
and at times it a FAT error.

I'll be surprised if, from this, anyone can suggest anything ...

But, what the hell ... ask not, know naught ...

I know more info is needed (I need more info, and can't get it 
because the problem was caused by people who speak Unix).  Like
I said, I'll know more tomorrow, but I'd sure appreciate any
pointers re where to look and for what....

Surprise me.  E-mail any suggestions that MIGHT help.
