You need John Vasta's mods to gcc.  I would put this in the FAQ file but
I've lost the ftp location of the patches.

It's not a good idea to build the client libraries with gcc, because you
can't share the text segment (in fact, you don't get a text segment).
Everything else can be built with gcc as far as I know.
